Here comes The Red Devil

I have a new chemotherapy plan

I will be getting dense dose AC for 4 treatments, followed by Taxol. I'll start on Monday. Because I'll have a treatment every 2 weeks, I won't have time to recover my blood cells, so I'll also be getting daily Neupogen shots for a week after chemo. We are expecting a difficult time, but I also expect to get through it.

When they start the Taxol, it will be in a very controlled environment. It's in the same family as the evil Taxotere. I'll be premedicated with everything known to man, and they'll slowly give it a shot. I am going to block that portion of treatment out of my mind until I get there. I just can't waste energy dwelling on what *might* happen.

Wednesday I will go in for a MUGA scan on my heart. Adriamycin is cytotoxic. It's nickname is the red devil... but that is because it is actually colored red. It can cause congestive heart failure. So we have to know my heart is strong enough to hold up. Given my youth (the nurse's words, not mine) my heart should be just fine. She also mentioned that they can usually give one dose without the scan, but the Dr doesn't feel very lucky with me, and is insisting on the scan first. I've never been one to break a law, and that includes Mr. Murphy's.

So the next battle begins Monday. Stay tuned.
